90 minutes of an old French couple's life in the French countryside. Interestingly, the documentary's subject, the blacksmith Jules, he may have been instructed to act unaware of the cameras, but I get a feeling that he just doesn't care about them. I wonder about the hows and whys of this production, how you get a couple born in the 1800s, living without electricity to agree to be filmed, how do you even find such a couple? As for the whys well... just why? There is a relaxing quality to the film, but I'll be honest, I think this would be best enjoyed sort of in the background while doing something, devoting your full attention to this seems to yield little rewards, and I LOVE slow cinema. I also get the feeling this was artificially stretched to be feature length, it's just too convenient that this is exactly 91 minutes. Do I think that there is value here? Yes, but it does feel sort of empty.

This is extremely ambitious, it'd be one thing if this was shot entirely in New York with American actors and Japanese crew, but only like, half the movie takes place in New York and at no point does it feel disjointed. It's kind of baffling to experience, the music was leading me to believe this would have a bit of an exploitation edge, I didn't know whether to expect American Blacksploitation or Japanese Pinky Violence. I wouldn't call it either, but there's nothing to be disappointed about with the look or feel of this film, whichever way you slice it, it's 70's sleaze. When you do cut into the meat of this film, you've got a really fun to follow, engaging whodunnit that takes you around the world, through generations as the story unravels. It's a little long in the tooth, and gets kinda hammy near the end, but still emotionally gripping and at times devastating. If the story doesn't work for you, there's still a lot to appreciate here.

Directed by: Alejandro Jodorowsky
So this is one of those things that would usually set off my cynical white atheist senses, it seems like one of those faux spiritual healing medical mumbo jumbo deals that Gwyneth Paltrow would be all about trying on her Netflix show, but there is never a sense here that Jodorowsky is doing this for any other reason to help people, and nobody gets hurt doing it. There's such an array of people and issues that are faced, and you can't help but feel good about how beautifully simple and almost childlike Don Alejandro's solutions are. But again, even if you doubt that anything seen in here would effect a person's life significantly, there is no argument against the fact that they're all just good energy being put out into the world, or channeled into one person. I never got the sense that any of this was falsified, I never sensed anything nefarious, because there doesn't seem to be an agenda. I do sense that Jodorowsky, besides being an incredible visionary is extremely important to his community, and has changed many people's lives.

Directed by: Eric Rohmer
Not many films have been able to make me feel the way this one has. Our protagonist seems to have a bit of a meltdown early on which leads to her making a foolhardy decision with the direction of her life that she has done absolutely nothing to ready herself for. You don't really realize the extent of the meltdown until it all crashes together. I'm making this sound very dramatic, but it's not like you're picturing, this is Eric Rohmer, he can't make things that aren't classy and beautiful. My point is, our main character becomes a petulant brat at times, doing things that are completely unappealing, but I at least was ready to forgive them all. You want to see her do better, not fail miserably. It's this kind of nuanced female voice that you can expect from Rohmer films, but is such a rarity anywhere else.
