December 3rd Directed by: Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck I was never planning on watching this movie. Frozen was not a movie I enjoyed, I found all the songs to be hokey and completely wrong for a Disney musical, I felt they were trying to modernize the formula and going about it the wrong way. I question my feelings on that movie now. One of my biggest irritations that the first installment brought up was Idina Menzel, her voice was weird, the inflections she chose felt completely out of place, when everyone else in the movie seemed to get what they were supposed to do, she was doing the equivalent of butchering the national anthem to me. The first of many surprises for me was the song Show Yourself, where it seems like they wrote it just for her, it showcased her unusual style and it didn't feel out of place. This sequel learns from it's predecessors mistakes, despite referencing the first film far too much. The pacing was kinda strange at first, there's a couple of songs about how everything is super duper, but Into the Unknown begins us on a true Disney classic. Every song had a meaning that resonated, (even Olaf's) the whole tone was dark, emotional, memorable. I think they knew they got the little girl market and decided to open it up, because this movie really can work for anyone. It's wholly new, unique and effective. It helps that Disney's animation is just impossibly dazzling now, it's a marvel in many ways. Frozen II just really, very good. Theater.
