January 28th Directed by: Edward Yang Edward Yang is the greatest director of all time. Now I don't know if I mean that because y'know, Ozu exists, but this is Yang's first feature and it's impossible to imagine that being true. Instantly a master. That Day, on the Beach is a contemplative, complicated construction and it's really astounding in every way a film can be. I can't really say much about it, so that's it. Thanks.

January 25th Directed by: Guillermo Del Toro If you told someone to come up with a plot of something Guillermo Del Toro would make, it would be this. So you should know exactly what you're gonna get, and if you liked Pan's Labyrinth I think you'll like this. The Shape of Water has actually made me ask myself an interesting question when I was comparing the two, because I always thought of Pan's Labyrinth as a kid's movie, but I initially wouldn't say the same for this movie. I won't say why, but I find it to be interesting that that was my instinct, and I'm definitely questioning myself for it. But if it weren't for The Oscars I don't think I would have ever gotten around to seeing this, and I think it totally fits in as a Best Picture nominee. There are moments of brilliance and moments of painful overtness. It's probably exactly what you expect, and coming from Del Toro I wouldn't call that a bad thing.

January 24th Directed by: Luca Guadagnino This more closely resembles the movies I like than any other Best Picture nominee so far. I feel like there was an attempt to look like an Eric Rohmer film, maybe they were just going for authentic '80s France, but either way I appreciate it. It still falls into the trappings of modern films but definitely not as much. It seems that Europeans are still trying to make good films even if they are being influenced by America too much. I'll probably rescind my 8/10 at some point but right now this movie made me feel stuff so it's a good.

January 23rd Directed by: Martin McDonagh Now I'm not really one for "concepts" but I'll admit the premise of this film had me interested. Strong premise. I guess credit to Martin McDonagh because you never truly know where his stories are going next, but this one just felt unfocused. I don't want to say too much about what happens but it's really all over the place. While I do think Three Billboards feels different than the rest of McDonagh's catalog, at the same time it makes me feel like I've outgrown his films. This movie's dialogue is just so obnoxious and yet I find the characters to be memorable and charming. I'm feeling a lot of conflicting things about this movie. It's bad but I like it?

January 23rd Directed by: Steven Spielberg So I guess this is what Spielberg makes now. Even though I really liked Bridge of Spies I wasn't looking forward to this one. I couldn't even tell you what this movie's about. Journalism? I guess? I can tell you Meryl Streep does the good acting. Throw her another statue. This is the most boring film I've ever seen in my life. I'm exaggerating. Fuck. Don't watch this movie.

January 23rd Directed by: Joe Wright So the Academy Award nominees are out and here's your typical historical biopic. If you've seen one of these, you've seen them all. Eccentric individual is put in a position where all of their peers and superiors doubt them but they're proven wrong in the end. But not just that, somehow every film like this one feels exactly the same, go watch The Good Shepherd from 2006 and you'll feel like you're watching the same movie. All that said, the actual subject matter of Darkest Hour is moderately interesting and as embellished as I'm sure it is, it almost makes me patriotic for the UK. It does what it's supposed to, it's very surface level but it's not the worst of it's kind.
