Danger Pays
February 13th Directed by: Kô Nakahira So I paid $50 for Tokyo Mighty Guy and this was also on there. So there you have it. No, but actually on the menu of the disc it interspersed scenes from both films, I couldn't tell what was what, but I knew I definitely liked what I saw. Visually, it's wonderful. It's '60s Japan. You know what you're getting into here. However, the film's just... kinda boring. There's one scene I remember well, and another that I can't remember if it was in this or Tokyo Mighty Guy.

Tokyo Mighty Guy
February 13th Directed by: Buichi Saito My expectations were FAR too high for this film, but it seriously ticks all my boxes. First I was sold just on the poster. Look at this fuckin' guy. Akira Kobayashi's charisma comes through in a single image. It's also about cooking, is Japanese and was made in the '60s. I ALSO FOUND OUT AFTER PUTTING IT ON THAT IT'S KIND OF A FUCKING MUSICAL. How is this not my favorite movie? Well, I don't know, I'll have to watch it again to figure that out.

Syndromes and a Century (2006)
February 8th Directed by: Apichatpong Weerasethakul Thai and Malay film is so interesting to me, what little I know about it. To me, it seems like an influence of New Taiwan Cinema but I'm sure it's not so much of an influence as it's just the way that it is in South Asia. This film is mostly just about a vague idea, that being Weerasethakul's memories of growing up in hospitals, as both of his parents were doctors. The film faced censorship for depicting doctors drinking alcohol and kissing among other slightly less trivial things. It's interesting, the country's values.

Phantom Thread
February 8th Directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson I wouldn't recommend reading this if you plan to see the film. Comparing Phantom Thread to PT Anderson's other works yields interesting results. Despite how different I find this film to be I feel like it's actually made me a fan of PTA. I'm not even sure why I like this movie, there's seemingly nothing about this film that isn't surface level. There's a moment right at the end that is presented as if it's supposed to be a twist and... it's not? It's just... something. But I was always intrigued, always wondering what the characters were thinking, where it was going next. I was never bored.
