A Better Tomorrow precedes The Killer, which was probably the turning point of what people know John Woo films to be. The Woo-isms are there, such as the spectacular violence in wonderful slow motion. I don't know if I've seen more satisfying looking squibs. There are a few scenes in this that will stick with me, it was my first time seeing them but they were instantly iconic to me. This is a smart thriller, they build a sense of family and loyalty, and it's put to the test in Hong Kong's underworld. I kind of want to watch this again right now.
