Holy shit, where do I start? This film is everything. Barry Jenkins is definitely coming into his own, but I still see the Wong Kar-wai influence and I'm not mad at it. Every moment in this film is beautiful and haunting. Can things be haunting in a good way? The pace is wonderful, there's clearly a driving force to the plot, but most of the movie is spent in flashbacks having absolutely nothing to do with the central conflict which gives it a lot of time to breathe and doesn't bog down the film with what could be seen as a predictable, generic story, it gets away with it because it's almost an afterthought, which is beautiful in context. There's so much care given to supporting characters, which was also one of Moonlight's strengths. I can't even begin to dissect the complexities of these characters, and the realities they are based on, it's something I could only hope to fathom.

I don't know why you'd make a sequel so quickly and basically just do the same story again, but it's a bit better this time. Even with the tighter script it's sometimes hard to remember what the hell is going on, not that it really matters. The change of scenery stands out and makes this sequel have a very memorable aesthetic. Also it has knife fights.

Start to finish a great film. I definitely did not know what Rutger Hauer + Ermanno Olmi was gonna look like, and I could not have hoped for any more. Olmi was still rockin' that classic mid-century European style late into the 80's, and Hauer wears every one of his character's thoughts on his face like it's written across his forehead, he is transcendent. The plot is just as thin as I like it to be, this is one of those films that just feels substantial.

There's a couple of really interesting points but mostly this is a really straight-laced film. Zigeunerweisen was definitely a perfect balance of classic filmmaking and Suzuki flourish and this one is just kinda boring in comparison. We have the same cinematographer here but for some reason I wasn't really blown away ever. It's good by proxy of being a sum of it's parts.

I wonder if it was just easier to call this Suspiria rather than have people comment on the base level similarities. Also, I guess not nearly as many eyes would have crossed this film were it not called what it's called. Point being, we have two entirely different films here. This one's good. It's kind of stunning however, all the things that went into it and just a few hours later it's slipping from my brain. I have to talk about a serious issue modern horror movies have. Dream sequences, hallucinations, rapidly flashing sequences with spooky pictures. This is usually where you find a lot of great imagery and in turn, a lot of trailer fodder. If you want to show me great images, I have a request; could you work them into the story, give them some space and make them feel earned? Instead of jamming a bunch of cool ideas into 15 seconds and having the character wake up shocked. I know you put a lot of effort into shooting that, now could you put the effort into making it matter? Thank you.

Far more capable than any mainstream comedy of it's era that I know of, if anything it's kind of the opposite of ahead of it's time, I was surprised to find out this came out in the 90's. Sports, in general seems to be one of the easiest topics to make a movie about, I say this because there are so many good ones, it seems like it's almost hard to screw it up. It definitely plays off of a formula but it has enough to make it entertaining even to an asshole like me. Tom Selleck's charisma is through the roof, I feel like he could carry any movie and a lot more respect is given to Japanese culture than you'd expect, judging by the surface. It's nice, it's heartwarming, it's pretty funny actually and it's charming.

I can't figure out why this is so generally well-liked. There's tons of unnecessary scenes, making it feel way too long, the "fight" scenes are not shot well, and it's made obvious Nic Cage just wasn't capable of doing stunts or fight choreography. This, and it's main attraction is the visuals, but it just looks unpleasant. Is this acceptable colour correction? Because I could do this. On top of all this, it's just not memorable, in a month I'll probably remember two singular images and nothing else.

Directed by: Lars von Trier
There's a lot to think about here, as there usually is with von Trier. One woman's madness and devotion, her faith is tried by the reality that her world is ruled by men. Maybe I'm getting this wrong but it seems to encourage the protagonist's strange promiscuity, likening Christianity's stranglehold on sexuality to not allowing women to speak in church. Of course, there's a lot more to discuss with how the film ends, but I'll hold my tongue. Breaking the Waves pre-dates the Dogme movement, but I think it pretty much could be one save for one particular scene, it's like 90% uncomfortable close-ups. Despite it's interesting themes it didn't really elicit a strong feeling from me either way.

So take all the stuff I said about Raiders, about the gross-out spooky stuff, take that, but make it not fun. I mean, it probably worked the same on kids but to me it was just too far and gave the movie bad vibes. That and the fact that it just doesn't feel like an adventure. We have a terrific, albeit awkwardly paced opening, then we get dropped in India where it's pretty much a nonstop action scene until it ends. I can't believe this film is 2 hours, it just kind of happens and none of it feels earned, significant or iconic. It's nowhere near as memorable as Raiders but it's still a very well made, kinda fun 80's action film.
