A Touch of Zen
March 10th Directed by: King Hu A Touch of Zen feels atypical from any wuxia film I've seen for a myriad of reasons. The cinematography is like nothing else in the genre, they set an incredible mood with the shots chosen. It helps that the fight scenes are nowhere near as ridiculous as something you'd find in the Wu Tang Collection, and are genuinely exciting. The story is really engaging too, the catalyst played by Feng Hsu has such screen presence you can't help but be transfixed, like a Taiwanese Meiko Kaji. Blu-Ray.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
March 9th Directed by: Russ Meyer It's cool in theory, like, all the elements are cool but it just kind of bored me for most of the duration. That is until the end, of course. Some of the music is really good, but other than that I really got nothing out of this movie. Blu-Ray.

Eraser
March 8th Directed by: Chuck Russell The imagery of the poster made me think this would be a more serious thriller, but it is exactly what you expect of an Arnold movie from the 90's. The plot is actually kind of sophisticated and engaging to a point, that point being when alligators show up and eat a bunch of dudes. There's a lot to laugh at, as there is in just about any 90's action movie, it's a good watch, just at the end of the day it's not all that memorable. LaserDisc.

Secret Sunshine
March 7th Directed by: Lee Chang-dong This movie has an answer for every time you doubt it. It turns it around and shoves it back in your face. I got the sense that people who aren't me would get different things out of this movie than I did. It leaves no stone unturned when it comes to it's subject, suffering alone, pushing people away, not knowing how to help, heavy stuff. It's brutal, it makes you want to stop watching but that in itself feels like a reflection of it's themes, making me question myself. I feel like it would take a genius to write a story like this, it's just too perfect. Downloaded.

Burning
March 6th Directed by: Lee Chang-dong I feel like I've seen a few movies like this one, I'm reminded of Norte, The End of History (check it out) but I do feel like this film does some stuff different. This is one of those films that doesn't do a lot of talking, and leaves you to wonder what's going on in the character's heads in the extended silences. I appreciate long, lingering takes and Burning has an incredibly relaxed atmosphere because of it, even moreso than say, a Tsai Ming-liang film. There's a difference between slow and relaxed and this film is relaaaxed. There's a lot at work here, it's actually kind of amazing how complex I feel this film to be. It's wholly original, a memorable experience, I kind of want to watch it again right now to see what details I pick up on on a second watch. Blu-Ray.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
March 5th Directed by: Steven Spielberg I don't think I've ever seen a movie with such clearly well thought-out action scenes. Never could I picture a storyboard so well. Every shot is in service to the next one, and in establishing elements to make the scene make sense. It's fucking beautiful, I'm so impressed. Classic American filmmaking, folks. Anyhow, other than that, this is one of those movies that I've never actually seen, but once I see it... I've seen it. Practically every scene has been put in my brain by way of parody or tribute. It's simply a classic, it's unforgettable scene after unforgettable scene, and it's filled with grotesque imagery that will stick with a child FOREVER. Be it snakes, skulls, skulls with snakes coming out of them or just the fact that Indiana Jones murders like 50 dudes. This is the stuff that kids are missing presently. Downloaded.

March 4th, 2019 Story mode was shit, single player content in general is pretty shit. Game plays fine. I'm just not passionate about this one like I was V or the ones on PS2.

After Life (1998)
March 4th Directed by: Hirokazu Koreeda Koreeda is a master of little details, small gestures, everyday items, and this film, his second fiction feature, displays and maybe explains his philosophy regarding details. What a wonderful concept, the recently deceased must choose one memory to hang onto for eternity. Rather than an event, more often than not we find characters choosing a moment, something the living might find insignificant, be it a feeling, a smell, a glance, we get to know a vast array of characters intimately, quickly, based on the tiniest things. The film itself is dark, quiet, slow and it's themes are consistent throughout. I like that After Life was the last of Koreeda's fiction films I've gotten to, it's made me realize so much about his cinema and that he is one of the greatest filmmakers alive. Downloaded.
