There's a lot to think about here, as there usually is with von Trier. One woman's madness and devotion, her faith is tried by the reality that her world is ruled by men. Maybe I'm getting this wrong but it seems to encourage the protagonist's strange promiscuity, likening Christianity's stranglehold on sexuality to not allowing women to speak in church. Of course, there's a lot more to discuss with how the film ends, but I'll hold my tongue. Breaking the Waves pre-dates the Dogme movement, but I think it pretty much could be one save for one particular scene, it's like 90% uncomfortable close-ups. Despite it's interesting themes it didn't really elicit a strong feeling from me either way.

So take all the stuff I said about Raiders, about the gross-out spooky stuff, take that, but make it not fun. I mean, it probably worked the same on kids but to me it was just too far and gave the movie bad vibes. That and the fact that it just doesn't feel like an adventure. We have a terrific, albeit awkwardly paced opening, then we get dropped in India where it's pretty much a nonstop action scene until it ends. I can't believe this film is 2 hours, it just kind of happens and none of it feels earned, significant or iconic. It's nowhere near as memorable as Raiders but it's still a very well made, kinda fun 80's action film.

Directed by: Seijun Suzuki
This is one of those movies where you're just sitting in awe of literally every single shot, it never ends. Suzuki brought back his cinematographer from the 60's, Kazue Nagatsuka, whose last project was 13 years earlier, 1967, the same year he worked on Branded to Kill with Suzuki. This film is shot in 4:3 which tends to make me think of Ozu, but the general mise-en-scรจne also helped a lot in making that comparison. Zigeunerweisen gets it's name from the Sarasate composition, or specifically one particular recording of the piece which plays heavily into the plot. While I think all of Suzuki's quirks are here, somehow this feels very different from anything I've seen of his, it feels a lot more sophisticated and serious. This film's virtues cannot be explained by one simpleton's words, it is beyond explanation, every second of this film had me subdued. Suzuki is a cinema God.

A Touch of Zen feels atypical from any wuxia film I've seen for a myriad of reasons. The cinematography is like nothing else in the genre, they set an incredible mood with the shots chosen. It helps that the fight scenes are nowhere near as ridiculous as something you'd find in the Wu Tang Collection, and are genuinely exciting. The story is really engaging too, the catalyst played by Feng Hsu has such screen presence you can't help but be transfixed, like a Taiwanese Meiko Kaji.

It's cool in theory, like, all the elements are cool but it just kind of bored me for most of the duration. That is until the end, of course. Some of the music is really good, but other than that I really got nothing out of this movie.

The imagery of the poster made me think this would be a more serious thriller, but it is exactly what you expect of an Arnold movie from the 90's. The plot is actually kind of sophisticated and engaging to a point, that point being when alligators show up and eat a bunch of dudes. There's a lot to laugh at, as there is in just about any 90's action movie, it's a good watch, just at the end of the day it's not all that memorable.

This movie has an answer for every time you doubt it. It turns it around and shoves it back in your face. I got the sense that people who aren't me would get different things out of this movie than I did. It leaves no stone unturned when it comes to it's subject, suffering alone, pushing people away, not knowing how to help, heavy stuff. It's brutal, it makes you want to stop watching but that in itself feels like a reflection of it's themes, making me question myself. I feel like it would take a genius to write a story like this, it's just too perfect.

I feel like I've seen a few movies like this one, I'm reminded of Norte, The End of History (check it out) but I do feel like this film does some stuff different. This is one of those films that doesn't do a lot of talking, and leaves you to wonder what's going on in the character's heads in the extended silences. I appreciate long, lingering takes and Burning has an incredibly relaxed atmosphere because of it, even moreso than say, a Tsai Ming-liang film. There's a difference between slow and relaxed and this film is relaaaxed. There's a lot at work here, it's actually kind of amazing how complex I feel this film to be. It's wholly original, a memorable experience, I kind of want to watch it again right now to see what details I pick up on on a second watch.

I don't think I've ever seen a movie with such clearly well thought-out action scenes. Never could I picture a storyboard so well. Every shot is in service to the next one, and in establishing elements to make the scene make sense. It's fucking beautiful, I'm so impressed. Classic American filmmaking, folks. Anyhow, other than that, this is one of those movies that I've never actually seen, but once I see it... I've seen it. Practically every scene has been put in my brain by way of parody or tribute. It's simply a classic, it's unforgettable scene after unforgettable scene, and it's filled with grotesque imagery that will stick with a child FOREVER. Be it snakes, skulls, skulls with snakes coming out of them or just the fact that Indiana Jones murders like 50 dudes. This is the stuff that kids are missing presently.

Story mode was shit, single player content in general is pretty shit. Game plays fine. I'm just not passionate about this one like I was V or the ones on PS2.
