My Own Private Idaho is VERY 90's. If that makes you want to watch it, good, that's what I was going for. You could say it's ahead of it's time since it came out in 1991. I can't even tell you what this movie is about. An underground society of Shakespearean gay-for-pay prostitutes. A road movie with two locales and not much footage of actual travel. Whatever it is it's worth seeing.

Everywhen was handed to me by a co-worker on a flash drive, because I couldn't find it anywhere. The reason I was handed Everywhen was because said co-worker was so perplexed by this thing that he had to find someone to share it with, if only to figure out what in the good fucking lord's name it is. I'll tell you what it is. A couple of Nordic teenager's high school film project with a budget. This is like if you got a drunken 4 year old to tell you the plot of Inception. It is so hilariously bad in innumerous ways, but the fact that it never once makes one iota of sense is probably the best one. You know these kids had this whole thing planned out on paper, but it just did not work. It's like Primer ran through a bad translator. But let's be real; even if the story made total sense, the movie would still be bad. Let me leave you with the synopsis.
"A boy must fight his way from an alternate reality, back to his own, to save his suicidal 5-year old brother; when 3 billion people are reported missing."

There was no way for me to know what I was getting into here, this was not even close to what I expected. I don't want to give away much but it somehow is and is not as bombastic as the title and imagery suggests. It mostly isn't. There are so many strange decisions in how the main character acts, and where the story goes it makes for a completely unique experience, though I am reminded of Five Easy Pieces for some reason. Smash Palace feels very American New Wave, maybe that's just my ignorance of Kiwi cinema.

I've seen The Tree of Life several times. What I watched this time was the new Criterion Collection extended version. They said it was going to be like watching an entirely new movie and I should have believed them, because I think the amount of footage that is in both versions makes up less than 25% of the runtime. I feel this version is a big step down from the original. There's so much more footage of the human characters that it completely outweighs everything else and makes it entirely about the family with some random vignettes, than the original cut which had a better balance. I think this makes it lose a LOT of it's luster, and also makes it kind of boring. It's interesting for a fan of the film, it in my opinion is NOT the definitive way to see The Tree of Life.
