Directed by: Jerry Schatzberg
Pretty much everything from this era/movement in film is worth watching. There was so much creativity and artistry being allowed into the mainstream in the 70's it's incredible. The bar is so high but in comparison to some of the masterpieces of the time The Panic in Needle Park can only be described as "worth watching". It doesn't do much to rise above the pack, despite the fact that I think it's pretty much a masterpiece by today's standards. Watch it for the general ambiance of the time, a genuinely haunting ending and of course, Al Pacino.

Uhh... what? I have no idea what was happening at any given moment, aside from a couple of moments, visually it had that glossy digital feel that pretty much all modern Japanese movies have and it felt overlong. I really don't feel that every scene in this movie was necessary but I probably feel that way because I didn't understand the intent of any single scene. I wasn't a huge fan of House the first time I saw it and I know that shit's a masterpiece so who knows what I'm missing here. So I know I should, but it might take me a loooong while to get back around to this one because it was just kinda boring.

Directed by: Takeshi Kitano
I think I had a really misconstrued idea of what Kitano's style was. Kids Return and A Scene at the Sea were surprises to me but I think that's just the kind of picture he makes. Dolls is maybe the quietest and most contemplative of Beat Takeshi's films I've seen. A film meant to be felt, not understood, on that note there's a lot of clashing images, suddenly making me wonder if I'm still watching the same movie. At the same time, I think it was kind of bold to take a traditional Bunraku story in the direction he did. I'm trying to be vague.
